Ovarian Cysts, Types of Ovarian Cysts, Symptoms, Causes & Preventions

Ovaries are the female reproductive organs located in your lower abdomen on both sides of the uterus. Ovaries are responsible for production of sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone and eggs. Sometimes, a fluid filled sac develops on one of the ovaries and is referred as a cyst.

Formation of cysts is common and in most of the cases they are painless and do not show any symptoms.

Types of Ovarian Cysts

There are different types of ovarian cysts. The most common type of ovarian cysts is:

  • Follicle Cyst

Follicle cysts are commonly found during the menstrual cycle. During the menstrual cycle, an egg starts developing inside a sac called follicle. This sac is present inside your ovaries. Generally the follicle breaks open and releases an egg. In few cases when the follicle doesn’t break open, the fluid inside the follicle can form a cyst on your ovary.

  • Corpus luteum Cyst

Follicle sac usually gets dissolved after releasing an egg. In few cases the sac does not gets dissolved and the opening of the follicle gets sealed resulting in additional fluid accumulation inside the sac. This accumulation of excess fluid inside the follicle results in corpus luteum cyst.

  • Dermoid Cyst

Dermoid cysts are those cysts that do not contain liquid but instead are filled with hair, fat and other tissues.

  • Cystadenoma

The non cancerous growth that develops on the outer surface of the ovaries is referred to as cystadenomas.

  • Endometriomas

Endometriomas are those tissues that normally grow inside the uterus and can also develop outside the uterus and get attached to the ovaries in the form of cysts.

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition in which a large number of small cysts are present in the ovary and can cause the ovaries to enlarge. When left untreated PCOS can lead to infertility.

Ovarian Cyst Symptoms

The most common symptoms of ovarian cysts include:

  • Fever
  • Rapid breathing
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Painful bowel movements
  • Pelvic Pain during the menstrual cycle
  • Pain while having sex

Ovarian Cyst Treatment

Oral contraceptives are generally preferred to prevent the development of cysts by stopping ovulation. Oral contraceptives can help in reducing the risk of ovarian cancer.
