IVF Treatment – Procedure

IVF procedure followed by Infertility Specialist at Hedge hospital

Ovulation Induction: Medications are provided to stimulate the follicle to produce and release one or more eggs during the process of ovulation. The fertility specialist at hedge centre monitors the process and make sure the ovaries are producing eggs and ideal hormone levels are present in the uterus. This is achieved by providing meditations for oocyte maturation and taking progesterone supplements for the preparing the uterus lining for implantation.

Egg retrieval: During this process of IVF treatment, a minor surgical procedure is conducted. In this procedure a thin needle is inserted through the vagina, and the egg is collected from the follicular fluid. The fertility specialist performs a vaginal ultrasound to aid this process and the collected egg is placed.

Insemination & Fertilization: Next procedure is the collection of sperm and introducing them to the egg. The semen is collected and a concentrated collection of motile sperm is created. This collection of sperm is mixed with the egg in a sterile chamber. In some cases, the sperms are directly injected to the egg (ICSI process). The sperm and egg are then placed in a chamber and monitored for fertilization and development of a healthy embryo.

Embryo Transfer and implantation: Embryo transfer is the final step of the IVF process. In this procedure the fertility specialist collect the healthiest embryo for transfer. The embryo is then transferred to the uterine cavity via a small tube placed trough the vagina and the cervical area. Once the deposit of embryo is complete, the patient is advised to take bed rest for at least 24 hours.

After the IVF procedure: On the completion of the IVF treatment, patients are advised to avoid any forceful activities. It is important to check for any pain after the treatment. It’s normal to have following symptoms such as:

  • discharge of fluids from the cervix
  • high estrogen levels can lead to breast tenderness
  • Mild cramping and bloating
  • Constipation

If severe pain is experienced it’s important to consult the fertility doctor as soon as possible. After few weeks patients are advised to take the pregnancy test to find out the results.
