Hypothyroidism Treatment for Fertility and Pregnancy

Hypothyroidism is a condition that is characterized by abnormally low thyroid hormone production in your body. Fluctuations in thyroid hormone levels have an effect on the growth, development and other cellular processes in your body.

Thyroid gland utilized iodine from the diet you consume to produce thyroid hormones. The two most thyroid hormones are thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3).  The percentage of thyroid hormones present in your blood varies as thyroxine accounts for 99% and tri-iodothyronine for about 1%.

Tri-iodothyronine (T3) is the hormone with increased biological activity. After releasing in to the blood, a large amount of T4 hormone is converted into T3 as T3 affects the metabolism of cells.

Hypothyroidism Treatment

Hypothyroidism treatment requires a life- long therapy. In the olden days desiccated thyroid tablets were used to treat hypothyroidism before the discovery of levothyroxine (T4). Thyroid gland in animals produce desiccated thyroid.

Currently in the present scenario the T4 is widely available and thus desiccated thyroid extract are not used which are obtained from animals.

Compared to adults, children require larger doses of T4. Thyroid replacement therapy is done to cure patients from hypothyroidism. T4 replacement is generally done in the morning, 30 minutes before eating and other medications that contain iron or antacids needs to be avoided as they interfere with the hormone absorption.

Hypothyroidism therapy is monitored regularly at approximately about six week’s intervals until stable. During this therapy the TSH levels are checked in your body to determine the amount of thyroid replacement given to you.

Hypothyroidism in Pregnancy

During Pregnancy thyroid gland produces an inadequate amount of thyroid hormone in few cases that leads to delay in development of the child. Treatment of hypothyroidism is required before or during pregnancy for most of the patients.

During pregnancy the thyroid levels needs to be checked regularly to avoid complications. If thyroid levels are not controlled it can affect the baby. The babies born to hypothyroidism women have low IQ levels and impaired psychomotor development.

Hypothyroidism and Infertility

Hypothyroidism and Infertility are interlinked as low levels of thyroid hormone effects the release of eggs from the ovary. Hypothyroidism is also related to certain autoimmune disorders that also have a negative effect on fertility. Treating hypothyroidism also results in improving fertility in maximum number of cases.
