Getting Pregnant with Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition in which the inner tissue lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus and can cause severe pain and discomfort. These endometrial tissues break open and bleed when present in the uterus.

Endometriosis tissue can be present in any part of the body and can bleed wherever present. The blood and tissues that get accumulated develop into a cyst or scar tissue.  Scar tissues can cause the organs to bind together.

Endometriosis patients show visible symptoms. The most common symptoms of endometriosis include:

  • Pain during menstrual periods
  • Lower abdominal pain before or during menstruation
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Infertility

How does Endometriosis Affect pregnancy?

Endometriosis will affect the Pregnancy only in two cases. First when the endometriosis affects the ovaries and the next when it affects the fallopian tubes. An egg must travel from the ovary and fallopian tube for the process of fertilization before getting implanted into the uterine lining.

If the endometrial tissue is present in the fallopian tube it can prevent the egg from traveling to the uterus. Endometriosis can damage a woman’s egg and man’s sperm in the uterus. It also leads to inflammation in the body. Thus, endometriosis can cause infertility if left untreated.

Pregnant women with endometriosis are at high risk of the following health conditions:

  • Premature delivery
  • Preeclampsia
  • Placenta complications
  • Caesarean delivery
